Is Ubuntu Losing its edge?

Ubuntu, poster child of the Windows-switching brigade, seems to be losing its spot at the top of the Linux distribution heap. The easy-to-use distro has been a favourite amongst casual users and Linux advocates alike, primarily because of how easy it used to be to try it out and get used to it. Recently though, long time fans have been deeply divided because of the switch to Unity, a new visual interface that breaks away from several common conventions and in fact trades Linux’s trademark flexibility for flashy graphics, which many in fact find distracting.

The minimalistic Unity launched Ubuntu’s Notebook Edition, and was designed for smaller screens and less capable machines. Users who chose Linux in order to tinker and experiment now find new corner Mint and even the classic Fedora distributions more to their liking, according to the latest rankings at Distrowatch.com. Things might even worse, as an option to revert to GNOME will be removed for the next release, 11.10.

New Security risks detected and patched

VLS MEDIA PLAYER

Due to vulnerability in the handling of playlists, attackers can inject malicious code onto a computer. Playlists in XSPF format are affected.

SOLUTION: The manufacturer has made available the updated version 1.1.10, in which the error is corrected. The link is available on VLS’s website.

ADOBE FLASH

Hackers are actively exploiting a security hole in Flash player that allows them to read data from Web pages which a user logged on to, such as email accounts.

SOLUTION: Adobe has closed the unforeseen cross-site scripting hole, and is offering an update to Flash 10.3.181.22 for download.

FACEBOOK

An android app named FaceNiff allows attackers to penetrate others’ Facebook accounts if they active on the same Wi-Fi network.

SOLUTION: In order to protect themselves against such an attack, users should consider always using the SSL option when accessing Facebook via public networks. The change can be made in the settings menu of Facebook.

INTERNET EXPLORER

Researchers found an IE bug that let them read cookies from remote PC’s. They can thus log in to some protected sites without a password. The victim is sent a puzzle game in which he has to drag and drop objects, which actually secretly enables the exploit.

SOLUTION: Microsoft has already fixed this hole thanks to researchers.

FB scammers use Finnish loophole

There’s a new twist to the recent spate of scam links that look like videos with shocking titles. Sophos reports that scammers are using pages translated into Finnish in order to tricks people into authorizing rogue applications to access their personal data. The button “share” posts the scam link to victim’s friends’ walls.  There is of course no such video.

Google warns users of malware

Google has begun warning users they might be infected with malware, according to a company blog post. The search giant started detecting connections from infected machines running through proxy servers, indicating that all Web traffic on those machines might be being intercepted.

The particular strain of malware hasn’t been named by Google, but it affects only Windows-based computers. Anyone who sees this alert is advised to update their security software.

People knowingly continue with unsafe transactions: survey

A recent Symantec survey has thrown up the shocking finding that people often continue with an online transaction that they might suspect to be fraudulent. While 55 percent of respondents recognized green address bar highlighting as an indication of security, 80 percent knew about browsers using padlock icons to signify secure sites, and 81 percent knew to look for “HTTPS” in the address bar, only 55 percent said they would not proceed with a transaction if these indications were missing. Further, 15 percent of respondents who were aware of HTTPS login security offered by websites consciously didn’t use it. More telling, 97 percent of respondents thought they were somewhat or extremely knowledgeable about web security, and 82 percent were extremely concerned about the need to keep their data and identities confidential.

Antisec rises from LulzSec's ashes, continues carrying out attacks

The group of hackers calling themselves LUlzSec might have retired suddenly and surprised the world, but a new group called Antisec has risen in its place. AntiSec has already taken credit for a number of brazen data leaks, and has successfully targeted the US Military and even FBI. The attacks usually involve accessing networks belonging to the target or contractors hired by the target, using simple scripting attacks that reveal passwords to administrator accounts. Common social engineering also results in the discovery of other accounts for which users use the same passwords. Compromised information is said to include military plans, schematics, and private email addresses.

In an apparently unrelated attack, the Pentagon has admitted that over 24,000 files were accessed earlier this year, though it isn’t specifying what information was compromised, if any. A foreign terrorist group is suspected.

"Locker sites" are not coryright violators: US Court

A federal court in the United States has ruled that “locker sites”, on which anyone can upload a file and share its link with others, are not directly responsible for copyright infringement. However, they can be tried for inducing and profiting from copyright infringing activities.

The case question was filed against Hotfile.com by the MPAA, an association of Hollywood right shoulders that has filed hundreds that has filed hundreds of lawsuits against file sharers so far. Hotfile.com claims it has no knowledge of or liability over the content its users upload, however the site does incentivize the uploading of files that prove to be popular. The lawsuit also alleges that Hotfile.com relies on third party pirate search sites to allow users to find specific movies on it.

Build a Facebook Profile Which You Can Be Proud Of

Facebook seems to be the hot social network these days that people of all ages are getting involved with. If you don’t currently have a Facebook account, I highly recommend that you go and signup now. If you already have an account, it is time to start using it to your advantage. Facebook is not just a place where you can connect with your friends, it can actually be used to further your personal brand and career. Here is how you can use Facebook to its full potential:

Don’t stay in your circle – You need to get away from just interacting with your high school or college friends and start interacting with people within your industry or other industries that you want to get into. An easy way to do this is to join groups that interest you as well as make friends with people that you want to get to know.

Fill out your profile (fully) – The best profile on Facebook is a complete one. This doesn’t mean you should fill out your name and contact information; it just means you need to complete all the fields available.

Don’t be shy – The purpose of Facebook is to connect and interact with other members, so don’t be shy! Interact with other members by writing on their wall, commenting on pictures, asking your friends questions, and most importantly telling all your friends happy birthday. Doing all these things will help others to get to know who you actually are instead of just knowing your name.

Spice up your profile – Facebook Applications lets you spice up your profile by adding things that interest you. For example, I added a YouTube application to my profile which allows me to embed YouTube videos onto my profile for others to see. Now if you are lame like me you can place funny videos on your profile or if you are smart like Robert you can add videos of yourself that are related to your profession. By taking the Scoble route more people will learn more about you and what you are good at.

Build it, and they will NOT come – This isn’t the Field of Dreams, you actually have to market yourself on Facebook to become popular. In most cases this is done from interaction, which I talked about above, but you can also do things like adding photos of yourself and other Facebook members. When you do this the other people that you tagged in the photo will get emailed, thus increasing the number of people who see you on Facebook. Some of the other things to consider are creating a group on Facebook as well as creating your own application, which could be distributed to all your friends.

Keep your profile up-to-date – If you don’t keep your profile up-to-date it will start dying down. By keeping it up-to-date it will gain more traffic and more people will get to know you.

CityVille is a casual social city-building simulation game developed by Zynga, and released in December 2010.

It was announced on November 18, 2010, but the launch date was adjusted to December to allow Zynga to make adjustments to the game.

On January 2, 2011, it reached the most monthly active users for an application ever on facebook, beating Farmville previous record although numbers may drop as its release date was exactly a month prior.

This gives the user reputation points which provides the user with a free goods bonus with each reputation level-up and increases the amount of energy, XP and coins bonuses available on a daily basis. Players can send other players gifts and help them in some of the goals.

The main task of the game is to complete goals, which can be seen on the top left corner of the screen and earn City Coins and purchase all current items for some. Players can also buy goods, sell goods, (supply goods to other players cities if their business branches are on their cities) and produce their own goods by farming and shipping.
